Effect of thinning on growth and yield of Acacia mangium-Dipterocarpus alatus mixed plantation

A study on the effect of thinning on the growth and yield of Acacia mangium and Dipteocarpus alatus was carried out in mixed stand of 5-year-old A. mangium and D. alatus at the Forest Industry Organization Takum Plantation, Trat Province. The data was collected in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The experimental design is randomized completely block design with three treatments and three replications: no thinning, 50% thinning and clearcutting. Each ...

Establishment techniques of some dipterocarps on ex-mining land in Peninsular Malaysia

Ex-mining lands on Peninsular Malaysia are mainly alienated from natural lowland dipterocarps forests before the 1900s. About 113 750 ha of such degraded land resulted from the mining industries of 1930s. Large tracts of idle ex-mining land formed the landscape of many major west-coast towns of the peninsula. To-date, despite various uses for idle ex-mining lands were encouraged including golf-range, housing and recreational parks, about 80 000 ha remain unutilized. ...

An Analysis of Changes in Land Use Patterns by Using LANDSAT Data in Northern Area of The Da River Basin, Vietnam

In this study, investigated were the changes in land use patterns of the Northern area of the Da River basin, Vietnam, over the period of 1993 through 1999 using remote sensing techniques. LANDSAT 5 and LANDSAT 7 satellite images were used as a set of source data to assess the changes in land use patterns with ERDAS IMAGINE 8.6. The land use patterns of the area in 1993 and 1999 ...

Forest Governance in Vietnam

Since the introduction in 1986 of the economic reforms known as Doi Moi, Viet Nam achieved remarkable economic growth rates that have contributed significantly to poverty reduction. However, the growing demands of industry combined with an expanding population have increased pressure on upland forests. Establishing an effective forest management system in this setting is difficult, yet essential.

Integral Projection Models for trees: a new parameterization method and a validation of model output

Matrix models are popular tools for plant demographic studies, but their application to long-lived, slow-growing species is hampered by the fact that (i) model output is highly sensitive to category width and (ii) growth variation between individuals can only be partially accounted for. Integral Projection Models (IPMs) – an extension of matrix models – offer a solution to these problems.

Michelia gioii (A. Chev.) Sima & H. Yu (gioi Annam) is usually distributed in Northern Vietnam and was first published in the Bulletin Economique (de l'Indochine) 21 (1918: 790) by A. Chevalier with the name of Talauma gioi A. Chev. However, up to now this species, or its existence in Vietnam, has not been recognized by most taxonomic monographs. Based on the type specimens of Service forestier-38204 and Fleury in Chevalier-30158 (located in Paris) and their morphological characteristics, Michelia gioii (A. Chev.) Sima & H. Yu is confirmed and introduced here with its description, habitat, distribution, and uses.

National Forestry Strategy for the period 2006 2020

PrefaceVietnam has a natural area of over 33.12 million hectares, of which 12.6 million ha of forests and 6.16 million ha of barren land are targeted for agriculture and forestry production. Thus, the forestry sector has been managing and running production activities on the largest area of land, as compared with other sectors in the national economy. The forest land area is distributed mainly in the mountainous and hilly areas of the entire country, where 25 million people from different ethnic groups live. These people have low education levels, backward farming practices, slow economic development and many livelihood problems.
